Associate Director Structural Engineering (Residential) – Bedford

We are looking for an Associate Director Structural Engineer to join our expanding multidisciplinary practice. This role will be based in our Bedford office.

Woods Hardwick is a leading multi-disciplinary practice of architects, engineers, planners and surveyors. Our structural engineering team was set up 2 years ago and has expanded considerably. As a result, we are looking to split the workload between housing projects and commercial/special projects. To do this we are looking for someone with strong housing experience to take full control of all our housing work, and to lead and develop a dedicated structures housing team.

The AD will report to the structures director, but with a high degree of independence. The AD will initially work with around 3 of our existing staff to form a focused team and will be expected and supported to enlarge this team. Within two years it could increase to around six people, in addition to the AD.

One of the unusual aspects of Woods Hardwick is our ability to offer a more-or-less complete design service for housing.

This is an important part of our offer to clients and is much appreciated by many. We have developed methods and systems to facilitate cross-discipline coordination, but these can and should be developed further and the AD will be expected to take a lead on this.

Our current workload includes:

  • Substructure design for large PLCs, with some superstructure design for non-standard buildings.
  • Complete sub and super-structure design for medium/smaller developers who provide a more bespoke product.
  • Typical projects range from 40-150 units, with a few smaller and a few larger than this.
  • Structural design of civil engineering structures associated with housing developments – eg culverts, headwalls, pump stations, retaining walls.

The role:

  • Day-to-day management of all housing projects
  • Development of an independent housing structures team
  • Checking of housing projects work to maintain the quality of what we produce
  • Liaison with our in-house architects and civil engineers where relevant
  • Preparing fee proposals and directing our accounts department on invoicing.
  • Developing relationships with existing and new clients
  • Developing procedures and base information applicable to our housing work.
  • ‘Troubleshooting’ where developers have specific issues requiring structural input.

Key requirements:

  • An engineer with significant experience in the housing sector
  • Experience of managing and developing teams
  • CAD literacy

We support all our engineers to develop their skills throughout their career, including achieving chartered status. We are a small team, and on occasions, we all need to assist on projects or issues that are not part of our usual work. This is a great career move for someone looking to secure their next role in one of the UK’s leading multidisciplinary practices for the built environment. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package including Pension, with salary negotiable for the right candidate dependent on experience and qualifications.

Note: we could consider candidates who wished to operate primarily from our Birmingham office, although they would be expected to spend at least one – two days a week in our Bedford office.
