A disused former DIY and garden centre in Bedford has been revitalised and transformed into a brand new Lidl store for the town. Woods Hardwick’s Architecture team was commissioned by Schroders to repurpose and reinvigorate the former Homebase store at St John’s Centre, off Rope Walk.
Working alongside the Lidl architects, our Commercial architects converted and modernised the existing retail unit design to provide a footprint and ancillary areas that aligned with the retailer’s requirements.
In addition to the architectural enhancements, Woods Hardwick’s Infrastructure team provided support in the external works modifications that have addressed existing levels, structural modifications, creating the new car park area and also a new loading dock.
The end result is a great example of how existing outdated building stock can, with a coordinated approach from a collaborative design team along with a proactive approach from the local authority, be revitalised and create a positive intervention in these difficult times for retail.
