W&H Peacock Auction Centre, St Neots

Founded in 1901, W&H Peacock have been conducting weekly auction sales in and around the Bedford area for over a century.  Following the successful development of their new Eastcotts Auction House in Bedford, Woods Hardwick Architects were pleased to join forces once again with owner Mark Baker to redevelop their St Neots satellite facility, creating another stand out auction experience for the loyal Peacocks customer.

The existing site at St Neots was a ramshackle collection of barn and office buildings that had been adapted over the years to create an inarticulate site arrangement that no longer met the needs of W&H Peacock as one of the premier UK auctioneers.

The brief was to salvage what we could, but to maximise the site potential creating a cohesive customer journey that leant on the success of the Eastcotts experience.

Whilst many of the architectural features reference the Bedford building, it was important that this new development created its own identity due to its proximity to the existing historic common land and the provincial town centre of St Neots.

The Flemish bond brickwork and the oak board were selected to work together to create a sensitive architectural language on this important gateway site.

The back barn was retained, re-roofed and the existing slender steel roof truss configuration was re-invigorated in a playful way which is a delightful surprise for the customer as they journey through the site.

Woods Hardwick were proud to be able to provide integrated planning, civil engineering and architectural consultancy services to deliver this stunning landmark building in St.Neots
